Scale Fun Fly-In at Maitland’s COMSOA club
Barry, John, Darren & Craig attended the two day Scale Fun Fly-In at Maitland’s COMSOA club. John & Craig headed off for the 2 hour drive early on Saturday morning so they could get a full 2 days flying in. Craig was flying his recently repaired L-39 Albatros turbine jet while John took his turbine Alleycat jet and a large scale Fairchild PT-19 which he recently bought from Darren.
Saturday was the quieter of the two days and this proved a blessing as John had not flown the PT-19 for years, and even then it was a short flight of what was then Darren’s plane. After a few problems starting the engine, a bigger starter was borrowed & all went fine. Craig was a little worried about the Albatros as it crashed on landing the last time it was flown at the Wangaratta jet rally. The worry was for nothing as the model flew better than ever, the adjusted control throws making it easier & smoother to fly.
Barry & Darren arrived late Saturday afternoon and after a meal at the local club and a good night’s sleep we were all ready for a full day of flying on Sunday. Sunday was very crowded at the field, heaps of all types of models both scale & otherwise. Models were flown in different catagories to prevent the slower models tangling with the fast machines. There was plenty of opportunity to fly in the different classes.
Darren made the most of the time putting in probably the most flights of anyone with his Boomerang jet. There were several display flights during the day including Alf William’s 4 engined Lancaster bomber and a full size aerobatic display by Paul Bennett in a Pitts Special biplane.
All in all it was a great weekend with good weather, terrific facilities and a club who did a great job organising the event. Definately worth attending next year.
